Most people don’t realize this about turmeric, but even as a good herb, the reality is that you have to take into account the side effects of turmeric when trying to come up with a health plan to provide for better health. Rather than being influenced by any adverse findings, it pays to take a look at the facts and make an informed decision as to how it can fit into your lifestyle.

Turmeric, also known as Indian Saffron, was widely used in the medieval times as a cheaper alternative to regular saffron in cooking because it provides the same rich golden coloration. For centuries, it has been used in cooking originating in South Asia, South Africa, and the Middle East to flavor curries and provide yellow coloration.

It is noted for its mustard-like smell and has a distinctive peppery taste. Even today, it is used to provide the yellow coloration in some mustard.

Like ginger, a close relative, turmeric is a rhizome root that grows wild all over Asia and is easily gathered. The roots are gathered annually, boiled, and then dried to be ground into the yellow powdered form we are used to buying today. In some locations in South Asia, it is possible to find it used as an undried root used for pickles.

Turmeric has a good record of medicinal use

In both Chinese and Ayurvedic medicines, turmeric has long been used as an antibacterial agent. It is often placed over wounds to keep them bacteria free and to promote healing. It is also used widely as an anti-inflammatory agent and to help calm digestive disorders.

In the West, turmeric is currently under investigation for use with liver problems, as an anti-cancer agent for colorectal, pancreatic and multiple myeloma cancers, and as a tool in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. Although researchers are unsure as to why it works, sufferers of the incurable disease Acne Inversa have reported an almost immediate reversal of the effects and the reduction of scarring.

The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin, an antioxidant, which helps to counter the effects of free radicals in the body. It has also been shown to boost the body’s immune system on an overall basis, as well as keeping cholesterol from depositing in the blood system.

The powdered herb is a natural blood thinner and anticoagulant that also keeps cholesterol in check.

The side effects of turmeric

The only real side effects of turmeric would be of concern to someone who

is pregnant (sometimes it can act as a uterine stimulant);

is allergic to it;

is already on blood thinners like Coumadin, heparin or Plavix;

is also taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like metacarbamol, acetaminophen (Tylenol) or even aspirin.

Turmeric can interact with these drugs causing clot times to significantly increase making bleeding a danger. Those who are on a regular regimen of blood thinners for heart or stroke-related issues should consult with their healthcare professional before starting on turmeric.

Turmeric for maintaining health

Turmeric, like its medicinal cousins, acts in such a way that it keeps platelets from sticking to the rough, sticky deposits cholesterol leaves on the inside of veins and arteries. When the platelets stick, a clot is formed that can break loose or completely block the vessel, leading to heart attack or stroke.

The benefits of turmeric clearly outweigh the side effects of turmeric. Taken in small doses, there have been no reports of side effects of turmeric in the average user. With a little careful planning, it can become a valuable tool in maintaining good health.

Turmeric can also be combined with certain herbs to enhance its health giving effects.

Native Americans used golden seal as an eye wash and to relieve stomach problems. Today, it’s used to treat menstrual disorders, minor sciatica pain, rheumatic or muscle pain, and as an antispasmodic. It’s said to enhance the potency of other herbs as well. The useful portions are de rived from the rhizome and roots of Hydrastis canadensis. Its principal chemical constituents are the alkaloids hydrastine and berberine; it also contains other alkaloids, volatile oils, chlorogenic acid, phytosterols, and resins.

Golden seal may have anti-inflammatory, antihemorrhagic, immunomodulatory, and muscle relaxant properties. It exhibits inconsistent uterine hemostatic properties. Hydrastine causes peripheral vasoconstriction. Berberine can decrease the anticoagulant effect of heparin. It stimulates bile secretion and exhibits some antineoplastic and antibacterial activity. Berberine can stimulate cardiac function in lower doses or inhibit it at higher doses.

Golden seal is available as capsules, dried ground root and rhizome powder, tablets, tea, tincture, and water ethanol extracts. Common trade names include Golden Seal Power, Nu Veg Golden Seal Herb, and Nu Veg Golden Seal Root.

Reported uses

Golden seal is used to treat postpartum hemorrhage and to improve bile secretion. It’s also used as a digestive aid and xpectorant. Golden seal is used topically on wounds and herpes labialis lesions.

Administration

Alcohol and water extract: 250 mg by mouth three times a day

Dried rhizome: 0.5 to 1 g in 1 cup of water three times a day

Expectorant: 250 to 500 mg by mouth three times a day

For symptomatic relief of mouth sores and sore throat: 2 to 4 ml of tincture (1:10 in 60% ethanol), swished or gargled three times a day

Topical use (cream, ointment, or powder): Applied to wound once a day.

Hazards

Adverse effects associated with golden seal include sedation, reduced mental alertness, hallucinations, delirium, paresthesia, paralysis, hypotension or hypertension, mouth ulderation, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, GI cramping, contact dermatitis, and megaloblastic anemia from decreased vitamin B absorption.

Golden seal may reduce anticoagulant effect of anticoagulant medications. Increased hypoglycemic effects may be seen with hypoglycemics and insulin. It may reduce or enhance hypotensive effect of antihypertensives. Golden seal may interfere or enhance cardiac effects when given with beta blockers, calcium channel blockers or digoxin. It may enhance sedative effects of central nervous system (CNS) depressants such as benzodiazepines. Disulfiram-like reaction may result when liquid preparations are combined with disulfiram, metronidazole, or cephalosporins.

Patients with hypertension, heart failure, or arrhythmias should avoid use. Pregnant and breast-feeding patients and those with severe renal or hepatic disease should also avoid use. Berberine increases bilirubin levels in infants and shouldn’t be given to them.

Safety Risk Life-threatening adverse effects of golden seal include aystole, heart block, leukopenia, and respiratory depression. High doses may lead to vomiting, bradycardia, hypertension, respiratory depression, exaggerated reflexes, seizures, and death.

Clinical considerations

German Commission E has not endorsed the use of golden seal for any condition because of the potential toxicity and lack of well-documented efficacy.

Monitor patient for signs and symptoms of vitamin B deficiency such as megaloblastic anemia, paresthesia, seizures, cheilosis, glossitis, and seborrheic dermatitis.

Monitor patient for adverse cardiovascular, respiratory, and neurologic effects. If patient has a toxic reaction, induce vomiting and perform gastric lavage. After lavage, instill activated charcoal and treat symptomatically.

Advise patient not to use golden seal because of its toxicity and lack of documented efficacy, especially if the patient has cardiovascular disease.

Warn patient to avoid driving until he knows how golden seal will affect CNS.

Tell patient to notify pharmacist of any herbal or dietary supplement that he’s taking when obtaining a new prescription.

Advise patient to consult his health care provider before using an herbal preparation because a conventional treatment with proven efficacy may be available.

Research summary

The topical use of golden seal extracts in sterile eye washes persists although there is little clinical evidence for its effectiveness. The plant possesses astringent and weak antiseptic properties that may be effective in treating minor oral problems. While small amounts of the plant can be ingested with no adverse effects as a component of bitter tonics, large doses can be toxic. The effects of the plant and its extracts in pregnant women are inconclusive. Golden seal is less effective than ergot alkaloids in treating postpartum hemorrhage. Berberine can decrease the duration of diarrhea caused by pathogens such as Vibrio cholerae, Shigella, Salmonella, Giardia, and some Enterobacteriaceae.

The Pros And Cons Of Anabolic Steroid Drug To Health

Anabolic steroid which is also called as ‘Anabolic-Androgenic Steroid’ belongs to a class of steroid hormones that links to hormone testosterone. It increases protein production within the cells thus build up cellular tissue or build muscles and body mass. This can be either natural or synthetic endocrine that regulates the body functions.

In 1930, Anabolic steroid was discovered and some drug company created anabolic steroid drugs as indicated for some medical purposes such as bone growth stimulation, appetency, puberty, and muscle development. But the most outlying use of Anabolic steroid is for chronic conditions like AIDS and cancer.

However, anabolic steroid drugs are one of the most controversial drugs today. These drugs are often taken as performance & stamina enhancing drugs. Thus, they often abuse and overuse the drugs resulting to various side effects and grave outcome such as giddiness, early hair loss, mood swings such as anger, depression and aggression; delusion, feelings of fear and suspicion, sleeping problems, vomiting and nausea, trembling, joint pains, yellow fever, high blood pressure, urinary system problems, heart problems, stroke, and liver damage.

Both genders can be affected by the anabolic steroid drugs. In males, the major anabolic steroid side effects are gynecomastia or increased breast or nipple size, enlarged prostate gland, powerlessness and reduced sperm count. While in females, it results to excessive hair growth on body and face, decreased breast size, deepened voice and menstrual problems.

Due to its health hazards, they come up with a directive that the drug can only be obtained with a doctor’s prescription wherein it can only be used when human body produces lesser testosterone quantities such as delayed puberty and impotence.

And based to the 1988 US federal law, the use and distribution of anabolic steroid drugs is prohibited wherein these drugs were put under the category of controlled substances in 1991.

Furthermore, the anabolic steroid drugs have an anticoagulant effect like in warfarin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and aspirin. So anabolic steroid drug must be used in precaution. Other side effect of the drug is that there is a risk of foot and ankle swelling and acne stimulation when anabolic steroid drugs and corticosteroids are used simultaneously. On the other hand, the anabolic steroid drugs may also be helpful to diabetic patients because the drug helps to lower the blood glucose levels. But it should be utilized with extreme care in patients taking insulin or other anti-diabetic drugs.
